Education in Uttarakhand is provided by various public and private institutions. The state abides by the "Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009" to make free education mandatory for the children in the age range of 6-14 years.
As per Census 2011 the literacy rate of the Uttarakhand state was 78.82% with 87.40% literacy for males and 70.01% literacy for females. Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Pauri Garhwal district have very high literacy rate in Uttarakhand, as compared to other districts.
In Uttarakhand there are around 15331 primary schools with 1,040,139 students (Year 2011). There are mainly government and private schools and institutions including primary schools, high schools, inter college, degree colleges and technical institutions. The main school affiliations are CBSE, CISCE or the State Government syllabus defined by the Department of Education of the Government of Uttarakhand. The government has initiated several programs such as Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Uttarakhand Vidhyalayi Shiksha Parishad to promote education at the school level. The schools in the state are majorly affiliated to Uttarakhand Board of School Education, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE).
