The Department of Geology of HNB Garhwal University was initiated at its Srinagar campus, in October 1975. The campus is located in the interior of Himalaya, from where even the less accessible areas could be approached. In the beginning only B. Sc teaching was there, M. Sc. Classes commenced in 1977, while research work was initiated in 1979. Since 1979,more than 25 batches of M. Sc students have passed out, and so far more than 500 students have obtained M. Sc. in geology, over 3000 students have been graduated with Geology as one subject and 38 scholars have received doctorate degree from this department.
Teaching in Geology at HNB Garhwal University
The B. Sc. syllabi is modified and updated after every 5 years, besides minor modification, through the annual meeting of Board of Studies. Now, as per directions of the government of Uttarakhand, a common syllabus of B. Sc. level has been adopted for both Kumaon and Garhwal University w.e.f. July 2002.Geology department of Garhwal University also offer students specialization in environmental geology, glaciology, remote sensing, micropaleontology and petroleum geology. Now Rural Technology is a separate Department running a PG Diploma course. Now, the M. Sc. syllabi has been modified and adapted following the UGC guidelines in this regard.
Research work in Geology Department of Garhwal University
Research work was initiated in this Department since 1979, when a UGC project on the Quaternary geology of Alaknanda valley was obtained. In the beginning, the research work was mainly focused on geomorphology, sedimentology and structural geology. With the commencement of an Eco Development Programme, the research work was carried out mainly in applied geomorphology and environmental geology. However, research work on sedimentology continued, with focus on the sediments of the Krol Group.
Under applied geomorphology landslide hazard zonation mapping was carried out in Alaknanda-Dhauliganga and Mandakini valleys. In addition to this, the geohydrology of springs in areas around Srinagar was also carried out.Research in glaciology was introduced in 1996, with a DST project regarding Gangotri glacier. Presently, research work is being carried out in glaciology, environmental geology, geohydrology and Micropaleontology. The Geology Department of Garhwal University has so far organized 5 national level Workshops/Seminar viz. in 1983 (UGC), 1987 (ONGC), 1989 (Rural Development), 2000 (DST) and 2003 (20th IAS convention)
