Mandakini River emerges from Chorabari Glacier near Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, India. This river is a tributary of Alaknanda River and is fed by Vasukiganga River at Sonprayag. The river merges with Kaliganga near Kalimath temple and with Madhyamaheshwar Ganga near Ukhimath.
The Mandakini River drains into Alaknanda at Rudraprayag. Alaknanda then makes its way to Devprayag and merges with Bhagirathi river to form the mighty Ganga River. This river has a length of 72 km. Mandakini River is considered to be pious for the Hindus as it associated with Bhagwat Geeta, a Hindu mythology.
The river flows in divinity near Kedarnath Dham, offering spiritual bliss to millions of devotees.Mandakini River turns violent during monsoon season, causing havoc in the nearby villages and destroying the parts of national highway in Rudraprayag district. The flash floods in Kedar Valley in 2013, was caused by this river only. The turbulent waters of this river offer Grade III rapids, a few Grade IV and Garde V rapids, which are ideal for white river rafting and kayaking. The Mandakini River Hydro Project is set up on this river.
