Literally meaning "Black Cobra", Kalanag is one of the major peaks in the Bandarpunch mountain range, others being Bandarpunch I and Bandarpunch II. It is also known as the Black Peak. It is situated close to the Ruinsara valley. It lies within the Bandarpunch group of mountains.
HISTORY
The first ascent to the summit was completed in 1955 by JMT Gibson, an English master at the Doon School in Dehradun. He climbed the peak via the northwest flank and the peak has subsequently been climbed a number of times by this route.

HOW TO REACH
The trekkers first get to Dehradun. The peak can be approached from the road head at Sankri. The trekking route through Taluka, Osla and Ruinsara valley leads to the base camp at Kyarkoti.
- ROAD: Dehradun has good connectivity of buses from Delhi. One can get a bus to Dehradun. The bus service is available all day with buses leaving every half an hour.
- RAIL: Dehradun Railway Station is situated at a distance of about 2 km from the city center. Major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Varanasi, Ujjain and Indore are connected by regular as well as frequent train services from the main city.
- AIR: Jolly Grant situated in Dehradun which is well connected with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore etc.
