Shri Shankracharya Math is a monastry in Joshimath established by Adi Jagatguru Shankaracharya. Famously called as Jyotirmath, Shankaracharya Math is one of the four Mathas (Monastries) established by Adi Jagatguru Shankaracharya and his disciples. 

Trotakacharya,  a disciple of Adi Jagatguru Shankaracharya has established Shankaracharya Math under the supervision of Adi Jagatguru Shankaracharya in 8th century.

Shri Shankracharya Math in Jyotirmath

A cardinal institution, Jyotirmath is a uttaramnaya matha or northern monastery. These Mathas were established to teach the importance of monastic life as written in Vedas, Upanishads and Brahma Sutra. Present Joshimath also gets its name from 'Jyotirmath'. A Laxmi Narayan Temple is situated inside the Shri Shankracharya Math and idols of Badrinarayan and Rajrajeshwari Devi is beautifully located inside the temple.

A 1200 years old spiritual tree, Kalpavriksha and a Lord Shiva temple, Jyoteshwar Mahadeo Temple is also best place to visit near Jyotirmath in Joshimath.

Location & How to Reach Shri Shankracharya Math

Shri Shankracharya Math or Jyotirmath is located in Joshimath on NH58, road to Badrinath. Well connected by road, Joshimath can be reach easily from Haridwar (275 kms) and Dehradun (294 kms). Buses and sharing taxis are available from places like Rishikesh (256 kms), Srinagar (148 kms) and Chamoli (51 kms).

 Nearest rail connectivity is at Dehradun or Rishikesh railway station. Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (272 kms) is the only airport to reach near Joshimath.
