Located at Joshimath town in Uttarakhand, Kalpavriksha is believed to be 1200 years old and called by name of Kalpatru in mythology. Mysteriously, Kalpavriksha remains evergreen throughout the year and never shed a single leaf by itself.
Kalpavriksha have been regarded as divine and spiritual tree in Indian history. Legends and Hindu scripts also shows a historical storyline about an enchanting and holy tree 'Kalpavriksha'. As per the Hindu scriptures, Adi Jagatguru Shankaracharya sat under this tree and worshiped Lord Shiva in then Jyotimath (now Joshimath). The Shivlinga installed by Shankaracharya has now covered and Jyoteshwar Mahadeo Temple of Lord Shiva is built under the Kalpavriksha.
An oldest tree in India, Kalpavriksha tree has the circumference of 21.5 mtrs and covers the whole temple premises. Now Armed forces in Joshimath have installed a wired mesh around the Kalpavriksha in order to protect and preserved this historic and spiritual tree.
Kalpavriksha is located in Joshimath on NH58, road to Badrinath. Joshimath is well connected by road and can be reach easily from Haridwar (275 kms) and Dehradun (294 kms). Buses and sharing taxis are available from places like Rishikesh (256 kms), Srinagar (148 kms) and Chamoli (51 kms). Nearest rail connectivity is at Dehradun or Rishikesh railway station. Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (272 kms) is the only airport to reach near Joshimath.
Ideal time to visit holy tree, Kalpavriksha is from March to May and September to November. In monsoon, roads are in bad condition and winters are cold.
