Sainik Schools are fully residential English-medium schools that aim to provide education as well as prepare cadets to join the National Defence Academy, Indian Naval Academy and other Training Academies, for Officers. There are a total of 33 Sainik Schools in India as of now. All 33 Sainik Schools are located in different States in India. The Sainik Schools were established by the Government of India and are run by the Sainik Schools Society, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Defense. Sainik Schools follow the CBSE curriculum.
The central government has decided to open 100 more Sainik Schools across the country.
Sainik Schools in Uttarakhand
As of now, there is only one Sainik school in Uttarakhand, located in Nainital, Uttarakhand. The Government of India has decided to open 100 more Sainik schools across the country, two of which will open in Uttarakhand. Education Secretary Ravinath Raman said that it has been proposed to run Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya in Dehradun and AN Jha Inter College in Rudrapur as Sainik Schools. In Uttarakhand, Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya, Dehradun, and AN Jha Inter College, Rudrapur, are meeting almost all the standards for Sainik School. The proposal for both is being prepared and sent to the central government. After the proposal is sent, the centre's team will inspect the respective schools.

Sainik School Ghorakhal was established in 1966 by the first prime minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The school is located in Nainital District of Uttarakhand, at a height of about 6,000 feet (1,800 metres) above sea level. Ghorakhal Sainik school is one of the India's Best Boarding school located in Nainital. The School is affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, and follows the curriculum provided by the CBSE Board. The School is controlled and managed by the Sainik School Society. The School prepares students to lead as officers in the Indian Armed forces.
Admission to Sainik Schools Ghorakhal is done through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE), followed by an interview and medical examination. Admissions are offered to class 6th and class 9th only. Candidates can fill out the application form online through the official website.
The eligibility criteria for admission to the Sainik School Ghorakhal include that candidates must be between the ages of 10 and 11 for class 6th and 12 and 13 for class 9th.
Admission Procedure of Sainik Schools
Admission to Sainik Schools is offered in classes 6th and 9th based on the candidate's performance in the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE), followed by an interview and medical examination. AISSEE is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) every year in the month of January. Students aged 10 to 12 who are studying or have passed class 5th and those aged 13 to 15 who are studying or have passed class 8th are eligible for the AISSEE.
Reservation of Seats in Sainik Schools
- 15% and 7.5% of the total seats are reserved for scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST) respectively.
- 67% of the remaining seats are reserved for children from the state in which Sainik School is located, and 33% are reserved for children from other states and union territories.
- 25% of seats are reserved for children of serving and retired army personnel.

Note: Admission are done strictly on the basis of merit in class 6th and 9th.
All the selected candidates in the AISSEE Exam as per merit need to appear before an interview board at the School and a Medical Board for various tests in the Government Civil Hospital. After the interview and medical examination, a final merit list is created, and admission is granted as per the final merit list.
