The name 'Ghorakhal' relates the events in 1857 when a British General in a desperate bid to escape the revolutionaries of Awadh, strayed into this area and his horse while drinking water from nearby pond died, therefore the name Ghora (Horse) Khal (pond).
The Ghorakhal estate was presented to General Wheeler in 1870 by the British Rulers. In 1921, then Nawab of Rampur, Maj Gen, His Highness, Alijah, Amirul Umrah, Nawab, Sir Syed Mohammed Hamid Ali, Khan Bahadur, purchased this Estate. After the abolition of the privy purses in post-Independent India, the State Government (then Uttar Pradesh) purchased the Estate from the Nawab of Rampur in March 1964 and later Sainik School Ghorakhal was established on 21 March 1966.

- Laboratories: The school has Physics, Chemistry, Biology as well as Computer Lab with all the latest equipment and technology where the students bring their learning into practice and explore the knowledge.
- Library: The school has a spacious, very well stocked, open shelf library cum resource centre designed to encourage children to develop an interest in a variety of subjects and to allow the facility of research and in-depth study. Admission in Ghorakhal Sainik School
The school is a residential institution for boys only. Sainik School Ghorakhal admissions are made once a year in April, in classes VI and IX only. Candidates must qualify in the entrance examination to be eligible for admission. Boys who are between the age of 10 – 11 years and 13 – 14 years respectively on 1st July of the year in which admission is sought are eligible to take the examination for entry in Class VI and IX respectively.
The candidates of Uttarakhand domicile will be entitled to 67 % seats including reservation for SC / ST / Defence categories and 33% seats are offered to boys of other states. The Entrance Examination for selection of candidates is normally held on the first Sunday in January, every year.
