Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, also known as JNV, are a system of central schools for children with special talent or aptitude, particularly from rural areas in India. JNVs are fully residential, co-educational, and affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education. It provides education for students from class 6th to 12th. In Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), the medium of instruction is the regional language or mother tongue up to Class VIII, with English used for Mathematics and Science and Hindi for Social Science thereafter. Education, including board, lodging, uniforms, and textbooks, is free. However, students from Classes IX to XII are charged Rs. 600 per month towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN), with exemptions for SC/ST, Divyang, all girls, and those below the poverty line (BPL). For children of government employees not in the exempt categories, the VVN fee is Rs. 1500 per month or the actual Children Education Allowance received, whichever is lower, but not less than Rs. 600.

Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST), an entrance exam designed, developed, and conducted by the CBSE for admission to classes 6th and 9th in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, The JNVST is conducted every year all over the country to select 80 talented and deserving students for each JNV. JNVST is conducted in two phrases per year. Candidates can apply for JNVST only once.

Lateral admissions are provided in class 11th based on merit created on the basis of marks obtained in class 10th. The vacant seats available in each JNV is notified every year in the local newspapers by the JNV concerned of that district. The admission to Class 11th is completed by 15th July every year.

Admissions in Jawahar Navodaya Schools in Uttarakhand

Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas is made through National Level Competitive Examination conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the children are admitted at class VI level. Children are also being admitted against the vacant seats in class IX and in class XI also through Regional Level Examination/Marks in the previous qualifying examination.Education in Navodaya Vidyalayas is free of cost. 

A total of 75% of seats are reserved for rural children and a minimum of 33% of seats are reserved for girls. SCs/STs also have due reservations of 15% & 7?% respectively. The Scheme envisages establishment of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, one in each district of the country.The medium of the test is in 21 Indian languages and is largely non-verbal and objective in nature and is so designed that talented children from rural areas are able to compete without suffering a disadvantage.

 All the children who have studied in and passed from Class V from any recognized school of that district and are between 9 to 13 years of age are eligible to appear JNVST for Class VI.As per the Scheme, a maximum of 80 students can be admitted in Class VI per year in a JNV. However, in view of shortage of accommodation in some Vidyalaya, it is restricted to 40 only.

Documents Required After Selection

Provisionally selected candidates must submit the following documents at the time of admission:

  1. Birth Certificate: Proof of date of birth issued by a competent government authority.
  2. Eligibility Proof: Documents confirming eligibility as per NVS conditions.
  3. Rural Quota Certificate: For rural quota admission, a certificate confirming the child’s education in classes III to V in a rural school.
  4. Residence Certificate: Valid proof of residence in the district where the JNV is located and where the candidate studied Class V.
  5. Aadhaar Card: Copy of the Aadhaar Card of the candidate.
  6. Study Details Certificate: Certification from the Head Master regarding the candidate's education in classes III, IV, and V.
  7. Medical Fitness Certificate: A certificate confirming the candidate’s health status.
  8. Migration Undertaking: An undertaking for migration.
  9. Disability Certificate: If applicable.
  10. Category/Community Certificates: SC/ST or OBC certificates, if applicable (format attached).
