The Doon School, is a renowned boys' boarding school in Dehradun established in 1935 by Satish Ranjan Das, cousin of Indian freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das and former Chief Justice of India Sudhi Ranjan Das. Curriculum in The Doon School
The Doon School is affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE). English is the medium of instruction, and the Council administers two public examinations – The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) at the end of year X and, subsequently, the Indian School Certificate (ISC) at the end of year XII. Both examinations are held annually in March. Since April 2007, this Boarding School in Uttarakhand has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma along with the ISC. After the +2 exam, many of our students go overseas for further studies and will benefit from the choice between an IB Diploma and the ISC.
Academic Terms in Doon School
The academic year at Doon consists of two terms – a Spring Term from February 1 to May 31, and an Autumn Term from August 1 to December 15.
Facilities in The Doon School, Dehradun
- Art & Media School: The Art and Media School was officially opened by Shri Kapil Sibal, the then Union Minister for Human Resource Development in October 2010 at the School’s platinum jubilee celebrations. This stunning 25,000 square foot building hosts an auditorium, a film studio, an Apple Mac studio and plenty of other teaching spaces. There are also museum spaces, a trophy room, and a reading room.
- Auditorium: This superb facility provides the School with a 100-seater, acoustically engineered auditorium. It has proved to be very popular for small conferences, drama, and debating events, visiting speakers and meetings.
- The Careers Information, Education and Guidance Department: This department is one of the most innovative and dynamic in School. The department has its own large and spacious office in the Art and Media Center and is complete with a library of hard copy and digital resources for boys and teachers to use for research.
- Dining Hall: Our Central Dining Hall, more popularly known as “the CDH”, is a modern, spacious and airy building. It provides the boys and staff with the three main meals of the day, as well as break snacks in the morning and afternoon.
- Library: The Kilachand Library has been refurbished and re-stocked in recent years and the school is committed to ongoing investment in print books and digital technology such as Kindles and other e-book sources and resources. There is ample space for research and reading on the ground floor, and plenty of access to IT facilities on the second floor. WiFi connection enables the boys to access their laptops within the building.
- Multipurpose Hall: This facility was built to provide the school with a stage facility with attendant sports opportunities. It is well used for conferences, assemblies, visiting speakers, Board Examinations, debating, concerts and social events with neighboring girls’ schools, as well as for sports such as table tennis and badminton.
- Music School: This is an excellent facility for a growing and dynamic department. The Music School is home to both Hindustani Classical and Western music. Boys have access to individual music rooms, a music library, and a recital room. Boys are able to study academic music and for the Trinity Board Music Examinations.
- The Rose Bowl: The Rose Bowl is an iconic part of the school’s landscape and history. This amphitheater was originally built by the first cohorts of boys in the school in the late 1930s and early 1940s. In 2009-11, the facility was completely rebuilt and is a stunning venue for plays, musicals, assemblies, and prize-giving ceremonies.
- Science Department This school in Uttarakhand has well-equipped facilities to teach the three separate sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as a science museum.
- Design and Technology The school has well-equipped facilities to teach the boys the latest innovation in terms of technology and design within the science building.

Sports Facilities in The Doon School, Dehradun
- Indoor facilities: This ICSE school in Dehradun has a gym and fitness room, squash courts, a sports pavilion alongside Main Field, as well as the use of the multipurpose hall for boxing and badminton.

Doon School Admission Procedure
This ICSE School in Uttarakhand admits boys in January and April every year. In January, it admits into the 8th standard (C form), and in April it admits into the 7th standard (D form).
To be admitted to the 7th standard, a boy must be over 11 years and under 12 years of age in September of the year in which he sits for the entrance test. To be admitted to the 8th standard, he must be over 12 years and under 13 years of age in September of the year in which he sits for the test. There are two steps for Admissions in The Doon School. In the first step, boys write an entrance test conducted in the major metropolitan cities in India (Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Dehradun).
In the second step of the admissions process, those boys who qualify in the written test are invited for a personal interview. The interviews are usually done in December, at the School, and in select cities in different parts of India (Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore/ Hyderabad/Chennai).
The Doon School does not admit boys after the 8th standard. In order to sit for the entrance examination again, the candidate must meet the age requirement set out above. The number of boys admitted every year depends on the vacancies that become available after the candidates for the ISC and ICSE have left the School.
Entrance Exam is held in October each year.
