Famous festival of Kumaon, Nanda Devi Fair & Festival is a cultural carnival celebrated in the month of September every year. The Nanda Devi Fair is celebrated all across Kumaon region especially in Nainital and Almora.
The fair is dedicated to local goddesses Nanda and Sunanda.Nanda Devi Fair in Nainital and Almora is organised for 7 days and 5 days duration respective attended by over lakhs of pilgrims. This year Nanda Devi Festival will be celebrated from September 6 to September 11, 2016 in Nainital.
History of Nanda Devi Fair & Festival
The fair has its mythology late back from 16th century. Its believed that during the reign of Kalyan Chand, the Nanda Devi was the family goddess of the Chand Kings. In 17th centure King Dyot Chand built Nanda Devi Temple in Almora. Since then Nanda Devi Fair & Festival is organised every year to pay tribute to the patron goddess of Kumaon Nanda Devi.
Large number of local and tourists attend the fair each year. Lots of local crafts and cultural prosperity of Uttarakhand will be put into display in the fair. Folk song and dance programmes are the major attraction of the fair. On the last day a great procession of Nanda Devi 'Dola Yatra' will joined by locals and tourists in large number.
