The Department of Economics was launched in the year 1974, when the then Birla Government PG College, was under dual control of the UP Government and the Garhwal University. The faculty then comprised of three lecturers. Since then there has been incremental development of the Department and new Papers like Quantitative Methods, Indian Economic Policy, Development Economics, International Economics and Regional Economics were introduced in the graduate and post graduate level. The Faculty has grown to 4 Professors and 4 Readers. At present Economics is a subject available at undergraduate level for a pass course.
Postgraduate studies and research facilities are available in the Department. With the collaboration of many national and international research organizations like National Institute of Administrative Research, LBS National Academy of Administration Mussoorie, National Council for Agriculture and Policy Research, New Delhi, Research and Information System for Non Alignment and Other Developing Countries New Delhi and Indian Council of Social Science and Research New Delhi.
The department is conducting many research studies in the areas of regional development, agriculture and industry ,banking and finance and gender related issues. The department has established a computer lab equipped with SPSS and GIS packages. The department of Economics is actively contributing in regional development through capacity building of students, researchers, planners, and social workers.

A candidate must have passed 10+2 in any stream will at least 40% marks.M.A Courses
B.A/ BSC (With Maths)/ and B.Com with at least 45% Marks.
Session
The session is from 1 July to 30 June in every academic year.
