Treks in Lahaul and Spiti Region

The district of Lahaul-Spiti is one of the most beautiful valleys in India. These breathtaking valleys of Lahaul and Spiti are situated in Himachal Pradesh and it is also the largest district in Himachal. The Lahaul-Spiti district was formed in 1960 and its current administrative headquarters is Keylong, which lies in Lahaul.

It includes the two formerly separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti. Lahaul is much greener and more fertile, whereas Spiti is a sheer desert with large barren lands. Before the formation of the district, the capital of Lahaul was Kardang and Dhankar was the capital of Spiti.

The best time to visit this valley in between the month of May to October because the weather remains very pleasant and comfortable. The valley receives very scanty rainfall during its monsoon. The duration between November to April is when the valley witness heavy snowfall and the temperatures go below 0 degrees.

Hampta Pass Trek

Hampta Pass is situated at an elevation of 4270 m above sea level. Crossing the Hampta Pass is a great story of adventure for all the trekkers. June to October is the best time to visit the Hampta Pass trek. You will love the excitement of climbing to the pass over many ledges, almost appearing to get to the pass, but never really sure until you get there. 

You need at least 4-5 days to complete this trek. This beautiful trek in Himachal starts from the Kullu Manali valley to the top of Chandra Valley of Lahaul. The difficulty level of the Hampta Pass trek is Moderate.

Chandratal Lake trek

Chandratal means Lake of the Moon. It is a famous trekking destination in Himachal. Chandratal Lake is nestled at a height of 4250 m above sea level. Chandratal Lake trek is an easy to moderate grade trek in Himachal. This trek starts from Manali and it required 7-8 days to complete. 

Chandra Tal is a crescent-shaped lake which is located in the middle of the Spiti Valley on the Samudra Tapu plateau. The nearby meadows are the best place for camping near the lake. June to October is the best time to visit Chandratal Lake.

Ghepan Ghat Lake

Ghepan Ghat lake is situated at an altitude of 4140 m above sea level in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. Ghepan Ghat lake trek starts from Sissuwhich is located on Manali – Leh highway. Ghepan Ghat is a tranquil neon blue glacial lake hidden in the beautiful valley. The total distance of the Ghepan Ghat trek is 28 km from Sissu to Sissu village. Ghepan Ghat trek is a moderate level trek that challenges trekkers with its difficult river crossings, exposed terrain en-route to the lake, extremely rugged and unmarked but beautiful trail.

Parang La Trek

Parang La trek is an old trade route between the Spiti in Himachal, Tibet & Changthang in Ladakh region. Parang La trekking trail takes you to the maximum altitude of 5600 meters to Parang La & follows the Pare Chu river which goes to Tibet & re-enters India. Parang La trekking trail has vast meadows which were a grazing ground for horses from Spiti Valley. Parang La trek offers you to witness the untouched beauty of the region with the wilderness and the verdant beauty. Start on your exciting adventure, from the enigmatic village of Kibber, which is famous for its elusive snow leopard population.

Bara Lacha Pass Trek

Bara Lacha Pass is an important high mountain pass in the Lahaul Spiti Region. It is situated at an altitude of 4890 m above sea level, It is only done by a experienced trekkers, you need prior high-altitude trekking experience to do this difficult trek in himachal Pradesh. Bara-Lacha La (Pass) is one of best-known tourist places in Keylong. Bara Lacha Pass is an important location as it is located at a point where the valleys of Lahaul and Ladakh meet each other.

Pin Parvati Pass Trek

Pin Parvati Pass trek is situated at a height of 5319 m above sea level. It is one of the most difficult treks in Himachal Pradesh. The Pin Parvati Pass trek starts from Phulga village of Kullu and the trek ends at Mud Village of Spiti. Pin Parvati Pass trek is a long expedition that gives trekkers a massive dose of adventure, beauty, and a sense of achievement. The total trekking distance of Pin Parvati Trek is 110 km that requires at least 10 days. July and August are the best months to visit the Pin Parvati trek.

Pin Bhaba Pass Trek

Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is nestled at an altitude of 4915 m above sea level in Himachal Pradesh. Pin Bhaba Trekking trail takes you through dense forests and shepherd’s trails on the Kinnaur side into the vast, arid lands of Spiti is a visual lesson in the coexistence of extremes. Pin Bhaba Pass is a great and perfect alternative for the Pin Parvati Pass. This pass trek offers s beautiful views of Himachal Pradesh. Yunam Peak Trek

Yunam Peak is nestled at an altitude of 6111 m above sea level. It is one of the rarer highly recommended treks in Himachal. Yunam Peak is situated near the famous Baralacha La Pass in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh. Yunam Peak trek is a 25 km long trek that offers you to witness a beautiful view when you reach the summit and you can experience a unique peace and joy while you enjoy this thrilling activity. It is a difficult trek that is recommended to experienced trekkers only. You have prior high-altitude trekking experience to do this trek in Himachal. Mount Kamano Trek

Mount Kanamo peak trek is lesser-known and a comparatively easier version of the more popular Stok Kangri trek. This challenging trek to the summit of kanamo peak is a test of your physical as well as mental endurance. Mount Kamano trek traverses through scree and boulder moraine from base camp to the peak of Mount Kanamo. Mount Kamano Trek is best done from May to September. These months offer charming scenic views and ideal temperatures for trekkers.
