Treks From Munsiyari

Situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, Munsiyari is probably best known for the arduous albeit thrill-seeking treks that lead to the inner region of the Kumaon Himalayas. It is the base camp for most of the glacier treks present in the region. Some of the well known and popular treks in Uttarakhand have commenced from the quaint and hushed town of Munsiyari. Some of the famous treks from Munsiyari are listed below:

Milam Glacier Trek – 9 days

Milam Glacier

The majestic Milam glacier is situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand and is one of the largest glaciers in the Kumaon region. Located in one of the remotest regions, this 16-km trek has its base camp in Munsiyari. The trail to the beautiful glacier lies alongside cascading Gori Ganga River and takes one through lush green forests, undulating valleys, and refreshing rivers streams. The majestic peaks of Hardeol (7,150 m), Mangraon (6,568 m) and Deo Damla (6,637 m) can be viewed from close quarters.

Ralam Glacier Trek – 9 days

Rajrambha - It is the name of a Himalayan mountain peak, situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state of India. It means 'celestial nymph' (Apsara) in Hindi. This peak is situated south of the Kalabaland Glacier in eastern Kumaun in the Ralam valley. The summit of the peak is 6,537 m. The nearby peaks which form the north-south massif are Suitilla 6,373 m, Chaudhara 6,510 m, and Ngalaphu 6,410 m.

Located an elevation of 2,290 meters, Ralam Glacier is located in Munsiyari tehsil of Uttarakhand, some 15 kms away from the Munsiyari town. It is located near Ralam Dhura in the Kumaon region and is divided into two parts – Upper Ralam and Lower Ralam. Apart from that, three other glaciers meet in Ralam glacier namely Kalabaland, Sutela, and Yangchar glaciers. The best time to visit Ralam glacier is April-June and September-November.

Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek – 8 days

Since the prohibition of entry to the Nanda Devi Inner sanctuary region, Nanda Devi East base camp is the closest admirers can get to the revered twin peaks of Uttarakhand – Nanda Devi (7,816m) and Sunanda Devi (7,434 m). The hushed town of Munsiyari is the base camp of the trek. While the trek is considered difficult, the rewards at the end outweigh everything else. The mere sight of snow-clad Nanda Devi, and Trishul from close quarters is once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Namik Glacier Trek – 10 days

Namik Glacier is located in the Kumaon Himalayas at a height of 3,600 meters and is enveloped by the enormous peaks such as Nanda Devi (7,848 m), Nanda Kot (6,861 m), and Trishul (7,120 m). Aptly named ‘Namik’ due to the presence of saltwater springs, the glacier’ is 40 kms away from its base camp which is located at Munsiyari. It is one of the lesser-explored regions in the Kumaon Himalayas in Uttarakhand.

Khaliya Top trek is a popular trek in Munsiyari that is preferred for its short duration and ease of access. This 6-km trek commences from Balti Farm near Munsiyari in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. The vantage of Khaliya Top offers an uninterrupted view of snow-clad Himalayan Mountains such as Panchachuli, Rajrambha, Hardeol, and Nanda Kot to name a few.

Apart from the popular treks mentioned above, there are other lesser-known treks in the Pithoragarh district that commence from Munsiyari such as Kulka Kund trek and Nagnidhura trek.
