The temperature of the hot spring is around 88 degrees. This thermal spring is surrounded by snow-capped peaks which make the aura divine.
Surya Kund serves as a holy place as it is located in the vicinity of Yamunotri shrine. Pilgrims from all over the world come to visit this holy kund. They prepare Prasad out of potatoes or rice mixed with salt and tie it in a muslin cloth. Then it is dipped into the hot spring where it gets boiled and then it is offered to the temple deity. After offering it to the deity, the Prasad is taken back home.
As per Hindu mythology Surya or Sun God is considered to be the father of river Yamuna. On being cradled in the lap of the snow-clad Himalayas, the Surya Kund contains simmering hot water, which strengthens one’s faith in spirituality.
Surya Kund is located near Yamunotri can be easily accessible from all parts of the country. The nearest railhead is located at Rishikesh, about 202 kms away from the Yamunotri shrine.
