Sem Nagaraja is deeply rooted in local legend, with many stories emphasizing its significance. One such tale is that Lord Shri Krishna once visited this region, drawn to its beauty and purity. He decided to stay, but there was no place for him to rest. Krishna requested land from King Ramola, the local ruler and his brother-in-law. However, King Ramola, who did not hold Krishna in high regard, initially refused. Despite this, Krishna vowed to remain in the area.

After much persuasion, King Ramola granted Krishna a piece of land where he kept his cows and buffaloes. Krishna then built a temple, which is now known as Sem Nagaraja. King Ramola remained unaware that Krishna had visited. Krishna stayed there for a long time and eventually appeared in the dream of the Nagvanshi king, revealing his divine presence.

The Nagvanshi king, eager to meet Krishna, planned to visit with his army. However, King Ramola blocked his entry. Angered, the Nagvanshi king threatened to attack. Before the conflict could escalate, the Nagvanshi king realized Krishna’s presence and saw his divine form. Deeply remorseful, King Ramola repented for his actions.

Krishna became known as Nagaraja, the king of the Nagavanshis. He chose to remain in the form of a large stone in the temple, where he ascended to the Supreme Abode. Today, devotees worship this stone as Nagaraja, believing it holds a part of Krishna's essence, and countless wishes of the faithful are said to be fulfilled through it.

To reach the Sem Mukhem Temple in Mukhem Range, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, you will need to follow a trekking route, as the temple is located away from the nearest road. Here’s how you can reach the temple:

By Road: The nearest major town to your destination is New Tehri, which is well connected by road to key cities like Dehradun and Rishikesh. Once you reach New Tehri, you will need to travel by car or taxi to reach the base near Talbala Sem via lamgaon. There is a large ground near the lake which is a taxi / bus stand where you can park your vehicle, and taxis are available for further transportation if needed.
By Trek: After reaching the nearest road access point, you will need to trek approximately 2.5 km through the rugged and scenic terrain. The trek is moderately challenging, so be prepared for an adventurous walk. The route will take you through lush green forests and hilly landscapes, providing a serene and spiritual experience as you approach the temple.
