Roopkund is a mysterious lake cocooned in the interior part of the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The high altitude glacial lake in Uttarakhand lies in the lap of Trishul massif.
The Roopkund Lake is situated at an altitude of 5,029 meters about 16,499 feet above sea level. Roopkund is one of the most popular treks of Uttarakhand, as it offers magnificent mountain scenery. The best time to trek Roopkund is from May end to October.

When the snow melts, human and equine skeleton remains can be seen can be seen with naked eyes. Some of the skeletons have flesh attached to it, which makes it a question to ponder upon, as to where it came from and it belongs to whom?
The remains of the skeletons have been preserved in the alpine conditions for centuries. It is believed that these are the remains of 300 people who died about 500-600 years ago. Few people believe that they are the skeletons of General Zorawar’s soldiers who died here in a vain attempt to conquer Tibet.
While some of them believe that they belong to the zealous pilgrims who went on Raj Jat Yatra to Homkund and never returned back. As there are innumerable stories related to it hence, the mystery hasn’t been solved yet.
Roopkund Lake is located in near Lohajung Chamoli ( 24 km trek from Wan village of Chamoli).
The travelers can start their trek from Lohaganj Pass which is well connected by motorable roads. The trek from Bedni Bugyal to Roopkund is not an easy task. So, gear up before hiking to Roopkund. Roopkund is situated at a distance of 14 km from Bedni Bugyal.
