Raja PRATAP SHAH, 3rd Raja of Tehri-Garhwal was the founder of the township of Pratap Nagar in 1877. Pratap Shah also founded primary school in Tehri that became college in later years.
Tehri was the capital of Shah Dynasty and it has a very hot and humid climate as it was on the bank of confluence of Bhilangana and Bhagirathi Rivers. As Britishers founded new township in hills as Almora, Ranikhet, Nainital, Pauri, Mussoorie for summers, Pratap Shah also founded a new township in his rule in Tehri Riyasat as British officers did and name Pratapnagar. Pratap shah built palace building, court building, treasury building and houses for state employees.
