Regarded as one of the finest mountaineering institutes in India, the prestigious Nehru Institute of Mountaineering was established in the cold winter of November, 1965 at Uttarkashi. NIM was founded to honor Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru's great desire of bringing younger generation closer to the mountains and instill a sense of adventure and compassion for the environment.
Apart from being an institute for mountaineering, NIM has also conducted several relief works during the time of a disaster. NIM trainees and its alumni played a major role during the Kedarnath floods in 2014. Their search-and-rescue operations were responsible for saving many lives during the disaster.
Perched atop turtleback hill on the east bank of the river Bhagirathi, NIM offers six professional mountaineering courses for all age groups.
This course is designed for school students, teachers, and adults who have had little experience in the wild. It teaches various activities like camping, cooking, navigation, etc. There are two Adventure Courses:
- Adventure Course (for the age group 14 years to 18 years)
- Adventure Course (Mixed) (for the age group 20 years to 50 years)
Considered the foundation course for men and women initiated into mountaineering, this course teaches all the basic aspects of mountaineering.
Advanced mountaineering courses can be applied for after attaining an "A" grade in the basic courses. These courses, besides brushing up the basic mountaineering knowledge, teach advanced techniques of climbing rock, ice, and snow.
Conducted just once a year, this course is for the trainees who have acquired grade "A" in advanced mountaineering course. The course covers Search & Rescue operations in the Himalayas with particular reference to rescue techniques on rock, snow, and ice.
The aim of this course is to prepare mountaineers in becoming potential instructors and see it as a career opportunity. In mountaineering and allied sports.
These courses are run by the Institute for different organizations on request. These include courses for deaf and dumb and handicapped persons. Some courses are also conducted n requests by military, police, and schools.
Applicants can also apply by sending the duly filled and signed Application form, Medical Form, Demand Draft, Indemnity Bond, and other relevant documents. The fee must be paid in the form of Demand Draft in the name of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering payable at Uttarkashi.
