Nakuchiatal as the name suggests ‘lake of nine corners’ is a picturesque hill station adorned in the “City of Lakes” Nainital. The 175 feet deep, a placid lake is idyllically situated at an elevation of 1,220 metres above sea level. It is fed by an underground perennial spring. Nakuchiatal is considered as one of the deepest lakes in Nainital, having a length of 983 metres, breadth 693 metres and depth about 40.3 metres. The lake is surrounded by enchanting flora and fauna, making it a pleasant sight to savour.

Nakuchiatal Lake offers a number of recreational activities to the leisure-seeking tourists. One can enjoy angling, bird watching and boating on the crystal clear water of the pristine lake. For the adventure enthusiast, there are a wide variety of adrenaline pumping activities such as paragliding, rowing, paddling, yatching and parasailing. One can also take part in the famous Escape Festival which is held annually in the month of May at Nakuchiatal.

Mythology associated with the Nakuchiatal Lake:

As per the religious beliefs of the Hindus are concerned, this lake was created after the intense penance of Brahma. According to the locals, a person who will perform parikrama or circumambulation will be by Brahmaji. One can visit the small shrine that is dedicated to Lord Brahma near KMVN guest house.

A myth which says – If one can see all the nine corners of the lake, he will attain nirvana:

There is a popular myth related to this lake which states- If a person can have a glimpse of all the nine corners of the lake, with his foot on earth. Then he will dissolve in a cloud of smoke and attain nirvana at once

Location & How to Reach Naukuchiatal Lake

The travellers can access this emerald lake from any part of the country as Nakuchiatal is well connected with nearby cities like Nainital located at about 26 km. Tourist and state-owned buses operate on a regular basis from Delhi to Nakuchiatal.  The nearest railhead is located at Kathgodam and the nearest airport is at Pantnagar about 80 km from Nakuchiatal. The lake is situated at a favourable distance of 4 km from Bhimtal, 26 km from Nainital, 320 km from Delhi.
