Nakshatra Vedh Shala (an observatory ) was established in 1946 by late Acharya Shri Pt. Chakradhar Joshi ( a scholar in Astronomy and Astrology ) exists on Dashrathanchal mountain in Devprayag. It is the first Indian astronomical observatory situated at height of 2123 from the sea level.

The observatory also showcases ancient pieces of equipment such as Surya Ghati, Dhruv Ghati and much more exhibiting the progress of Indian astronomy.
It is a very useful observatory with many preserved manuscripts (around 3000) are also available along with library, where you can find many antique things even some books are 400-500 years old.
In the observatory there are two telescope and several other yantras. The major telescope has been imported from Germany having two lenses each of 6 inches diameter and the length about 6 feet. The other telescope is a smaller one of a three inch lens imported from U.K the aim of establishing this observatory is to do research on astronomical bodies for panchang shodhana and such other works .
Apart from the latest equipment, it also has the ancient equipment like Surya Ghati, Dhruv Ghati which showcase the pride of Bharatiya progress in the field of astronomy. Shri Dr. Prabhakar Joshi and Acharya Shri Bhaskar Joshi (Popularly known as Guruji) are currently in charge and caretakers of the observatory.
