The locals also refer to Maheshwari Kund or Mehasr Kund / Messar kund or Meshar Kund by locals. It is located a few kilometres away from Munsiyari. There is a famous Hindu legend associated with the lake. It says a Yaksha, a demi-god who used to reside in the pristine lake, cursed the kund.

The story goes that the Yaksha fell in love with the beautiful daughter of the Sarpanch, the head of the village. However, the villagers didn't let him marry her and dried the lake where he lived. Upon knowing, the Yaksha cursed the villagers that they will suffer from drought for years to come.
Hence, the place battled with drought for several years. When the villagers apologized him for not letting him marry his adore, the lake was set free from the curse.
Maheshwari Kund is located in Munsiyari ( on Munsiyari-Madkot road).
Maheshwari Kund is situated at a walking distance from the Munsiyari town. There is a well-defined trekking trail that can be taken by tourists to reach the Maheshwari Kund. The uphill trek to will take around 45 minutes to reach the Kund. Kathgodam & Tanakpur are the nearest railway stations, located about 276 kms from Munsiyari while Pantnagar is the closest airport from the village situated at a distance of 305 kms.
