Mythology of Kalishila Temple

The Kalishila temple has a very significant mythology in the history of the Hindu religion. It is said that Goddess Durga disguised herself as Kali, a 12 year old girl, for the destruction of the demons Shumbh, Nishumbha and Raktabeej. This place is known to have the 64 Yantras of the Gods and Goddesses. Legend says that the torturous demons Shumbh and Nishumbh troubled the gods and goddesses living here. To get away from this suffering and misery, the gods and goddesses then performed a penance to please Goddess Bhagwati, who then appeared before them.

Listening to the plight of the gods and goddesses and the torture of the demons, Goddess Bhagwati got fiery and she took a monstrous form with her body turned black. She fought a battle against the two demons and slaughtered them with the power of the 64 Yantras.The local dwellers of this area consider the village to be fortunate enough, as the legend states that Goddess Sati was reborn as Goddess Parvati in the Kalishila Shakti Peeth only. 

Near the Kalimath Temple Goddess kali also slaughtered the demon Raktabeej, whose blood wasn’t supposed to be spilled as each drop that fell on the ground as a new demon emerged when this happened. The legend also says that the fiery Goddess Kali even after slaughtering Raktabeej was still in a hostile state; Lord Shiva then decided to lie down beneath the feet of Goddess Kali, to calm her down. As Kali placed her feet on her husband Lord Shiva, it calmed her down temple and she went underneath the ground. A silver plate (Sri Yantra) is covering the point where Goddess kali entering The Earth is worshipped by pilgrims and devotees. The Silver Plate is opened on the eighth day of Navratri and the Chief Priest performs a Puja at midnight.

Tourist Attractions near Kalishila

Kalishila is located near the Kedarnath route at a distance of 20 km from Ukhimath. The village of Ukhimath has a number of tourist attraction located nearby. The devotees can visit the Sari Village which is located at a height of 6554 ft. It is the base camp of the very beautiful Deorial Tal. The Omkar Ratneshwar Mahadev also known as the Devariya Nag Temple can also be visited by the devotees who visit Kalishila temple.

The Kalishila temple is located at a distance of 189 km from Rishikesh and 229 km from Dehradun. Kalishila is located in the Kalimath temple of the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Kalishila is well connected to a number of motorable roads and railway network in Uttarakhand and is easily accessible through roadways, railway and by air.

By Road: You can travel till Kalishila through a network of well connected roads. Kalishila is located at a distance of 189 km from Rishikesh and 229 km from Dehradun. Both Dehradun and Rishikesh are connected with one another. You can travel from Rishikesh to Devprayag and head further towards Rudraprayag continuing on to the Kedarnath Road. Then head towards Kalimath Vidyapeeth Road and then further at the Kalimath Temple. Then you will have to trek your way up as Kalishila is located at a trek of 8 km from the Kalimath Temple.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is the Rishikesh Railway station located at a distance of 186 km. The Rishikesh Railway station is well connected with a large number of railway networks around the country.

Rishikesh - Devprayag - Rudraprayag - kedarnath Road - Kalimath Vidyapeeth Road - Kalimath - Kalishila (8 km trek from Kalimath).

By Air: The nearest air connectivity is the Jolly Grant Airport that is located at a distance of 204 km from Kalimath. You can reach at Rishikesh from Jolly Grant Airport which is located at a distance of 20.5 km. There are a number of taxi and cab services that are available till Rishikesh from the Jolly Grant Airport. From Rishikesh further follow the route as mentioned above.
