Kaleshwar Mahadev temple has the shivling which is Swayambhu (Self-formed). As per the legend, on the occassion of Mahashivratri the local cowhearders found their cows missing which they later on found milking on their own in the cave upon a Shivlinga.
People also believes in the history that about 5000 years ago, Sage Kalun meditated here before the shivling. Lansdowne earlier name is Kaludanda after the Sage Kalun. In 1901, present structure of the temple was erected and a Dharamshala was built nearby which is now maintained by the Garhwal Regiment.
Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple is located in the Lansdowne city and can be reached easily by walk. Nearest rail connectivity is at Kotdwara railway station (41 kms) and airport at Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (149 kms).
