Kaladhungi in Ramnagar

Kaladhungi is famous as the place where the iconic Jim Corbett Museum is located. The town also serves as the local commercial center due to its strategic location and functionalities. As the land in Kaladhungi is fertile, it supports the cultivation of a variety of vegetables and fruits. Fruits like mangoes, guava, litchi, papaya, and bananas and vegetables like potatoes, brinjals, beans, cabbage, peas, spinach, turmeric, tomatoes, bitter gourds, etc. are cultivated here.

Significance of Kaladhungi Town

The name Kaladhungi comprises two words - Kala meaning black and dhungi meaning stone. Kaladhungi literally means Black Stone and there is a reason why it has been named so. In this place, black stones rich in iron content are found. In earlier times, the town used to be the center of a booming iron factory based on local ore and forest charcoal. You can still see the factory in Kaladhungi.

Before the road connecting Nainital to  Kathgodam was built, people had to follow a trail via Kaladhungi and begin their ascent to Nainital. Kaladhungi served as a staging point for the journey and took the travelers through canals, Jim Corbett Museum, farmyards, iron industry, forest rest house, and beautiful landscapes.

    Located in Choti Haldwani, just 3 kms from  Kaladhungi, Jim Corbett Museum is a former home of the renowned hunter,  environmentalist, and tiger conservationist, Sir Edward James Jim Corbett. The museum houses the belongings of Jim Corbett including his personal articles,  gun, cap, fishing net, bag, paintings, manuscripts, and his last hunt.

  • Jim Corbett Falls
    Surrounded by dense teak wood forests, Jim Corbett Falls is a 20 m high fall located just 4 km from Kaladhungi. The beautiful location of the falls makes it an ideal destination for camping and day picnics. To reach Jim Corbett Falls, you will have to hike for about 1.5 km from the main road.

  • Jim Corbett Heritage Village
    Located close to Jim Corbett Museum,  Corbett Village is the village that Jim Corbett had purchased from Uttarakhand government and later gifted to the villagers. A tour to the village will let you see the chaupal, where Jim Corbett held meetings with the villagers and other places which hold his significance. You can also engage in bird watching and village tourism here.
