Send Enquiry for Tour PackagesThe Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) at Mukteshwar traces its roots to the 1885 Indian Cattle Plague Commission, which recommended focused research on livestock diseases. Established in 1889 as the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory in Pune, it was later moved to Mukteshwar in 1893 due to its favorable climate and isolation, ideal for vaccine preservation and disease research. The local hill cattle, prone to rinderpest, provided valuable study subjects.
In 1925, the institute was renamed the Imperial Institute of Veterinary Research. The Izatnagar sub-station was set up in 1913 for large-scale vaccine production. After independence, the institute became the Indian Veterinary Research Institute. Today, Mukteshwar houses key research divisions, including virology and temperate animal husbandry, and continues to be central to veterinary research and advancements in animal health.
IVRI Mukteshwar campus also offers post-graduate teaching and research in current and anticipatory areas of animal health and production, contributing to the advancement of veterinary science and shaping future professionals in the field.
