Gujru Garhi in Nainidanda

Gujru Garh is located at an altitude of 2400 m which is the highest point in Patti of Gujdu. Gujrugarh is surrounded by dense mixed broadleaf forests including Rhododendrons, Oaks, and other local species. The temple and caves are on an almost flat hilltop at the extreme eastern end of Deeba range.

Gujru Garh offers beautiful views of some Himalayan ranges. There is an ancient well on the hilltop which is quite strange and rare for a Himalayan location. There is still water in it but apparently not for drinking due to the presence of dead animals in it.

History of GujruGarhi

Gujrugarh is one of the 52 forts in the Garhwal region. The caves are pre-historic and quite possibly were used as shelter by early humans. There are few man-made ditches visible on the way which were possibly used by warriors during the Gorkha period. Several battles were fought in the region because of its strategic position and the presence and activity of different clans nearby.

Gujru Garhi is blessed by the Goddess Maa Bhagwati, located on the mountaintop & the legend of Gujru Garhi dating back to the Mahabharat period. According to Mahabharata epic, Prince Nakul fourth brother of Pandavas, who built this Gujru Garhi place for realizing the eternal peace after strenuous war, was fought between Pandavas and Kauravas in Kurukshetra.

Best Time to Visit Gujrugarhi

Gujrugarh is located at a high altitude, in winters the weather is so cold and the place witnesses heavy snowfall. The best time to visit Gujrugarh is from October to May. It has a pleasant climate in summers and heavy rainfall in monsoon so avoid traveling here in monsoons.

Gujrugarh can be reached by a 4 km trek from Kingorikhal. Dhumakot is the nearest town from Gujru Garhi that is 20 km away. And Manila Devi in Almora district lies at a distance of 20 km.
