Gorcha Cave - The mysterious cave near Gorcha Village

Gorcha Cave, which is also known as Byar Odar Cave is a naturally formed cave located near Gorcha Village in the Chakrata region of Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. Gorcha Village is a picturesque village nestled in the lap of the Shivalik mountain ranges and surrounded with beautiful flora and fauna, lovely apple orchards, traditional wooden houses, and lush greenery all around.

Gorcha cave is one of the biggest cave in the region and is situated just 3 km ahead of Gorcha Village. It was discovered by some shepherds of the region. It is home to one of the tallest stalagmite in India.

Gorcha Caves in Chakrata

Gorcha Cave is about 5 mts (15-20 feet) hgh and spreads over a whooping length of 7 kms. The walls of the cave contains old drawings of shivlings and other Hindu deities.

There are many stone sculptures inside the cave whose exact age has not yet been established. There are also many rock formations inside the cave. One such rock formation is the tall stalagmite that has in its structure captured the climate records and its changes for over millions of years.

These natural marvels were built over millions of years of mineral deposited by trickling water.

   

Beliefs about Gorcha Cave

There aren’t concrete evidence stating the history of Gorcha Cave. However, the locals believe that the cave is associated with the Pandavas as the Pandavas lived in that region of Jaunsar-Bawar for 13 years in exile. The local people revere the cave.

Location & How to Reach Gorcha Caves

Gorcha Cave is located just about 3 km from Gorcha Village which lies in the Chakrata Block of Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. The cave can be reached by hiking for about 2-3 hours from Gorcha Village.

Gorcha Village is situated 9 km from Chakrata and 65 km from Dehradun. Transport facilities are easily available to the village. 

Alternately Gorcha caves can also be approached through Budher/Moila Danda
