The Ghatotkach Temple of Champawat is among the very few temples of Ghatotkach in India. Ghatotkach played a crucial role during Mahabharata and fought for Pandavas. Bhim had requested his son Ghatotkach to fight for them during the war. Since Ghatotkach was the son of Bhim and Hidimba, a demoness, he had the power to switch his size from a tiny beign to a huge demoness. During the Mahabharata war, he killed several thousands of soldiers from Kauravas side. Threatened from Ghatotkach, Duryodhan asked Karna to use "Amogh Shakti Astra" to kill him. Ghatotkach was finally killed by Karna using Amogh Astra. It is believed that the head of Ghatotkach had fallen at the very place where Ghatotkach Temple is located.

The Ghatku Temple is highly revered by the locals. A temple dedicated to Hidimba is also located a few hundred meters away from Ghatotkach Temple.
