Garud Tal is one of the seven lakes of Sattal which are interconnected. The name of these seven lakes is Purna Tal, Ram Tal, Sita Tal, Lakshman Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal, Sukha Tal, and Garud Tal. Sattal is mysteriously connected with these seven freshwater lakes which are situated 22 km away from Nainital.

GaruTal and the rest of the connected lakes are a paradise for migratory birds as they stay for some time here during their migration. Sattal is one of the few unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in India. It is situated at an elevation of 4500 ft above sea level. Garud tal is set in a dense forest of oak and pine trees.
Garud Tal is also known as Demons Lake or Rakshash Tal because a lot of suicides took place on this lake. People believe that this lake is connected with the story of The Epic Mahabharata. They said that it is the same lake where Dharma tests the Pandava Brothers as they come to drink water from this lake and where they all fail except for the fastidious, ethical Yudhisthira.
