Its importance as a British hill resort declined, and it became a sleepy little hill town. Between 1815 and 1847, the British established it. Dharamshala was founded in 1849 as an army subsidiary cantonment for troops stationed at Kangra and took its name from an old Hindu sanctuary called 'Dharamshala.'
