Due to its regal past, the town is famous for its revered temples especially Raj Rajeshwari Temple which showcases the exquisite ancient Garhwali architecture that once adorned this beautiful town.
The hilly town of Devalgarh became popular when King Ajay Pal of Garhwal kingdom shifted his capital from Chandpur Garhi to Devalgarh. It remained the fledgling capital of Garhwal Kingdom from 1512-1517 before it was shifted to Srinagar. Even after that, the royal entourage used to spend their summer in Devalgarh and winters in Srinagar. Such was the mesmerizing beauty of the Devalgarh town. Presently many of the historical temples and architecture are under the Archeological Survey of India.
Devalgarh is famous for the group of ancient temples which are believed to be built in medieval period. The architecture of temples strongly draws influence from exquisite Garhwali architecture. Some of the famous temples in Devalgarh are:
Raj-Rajeshwari temple is famous shrine in Devalgarh which attracts large number of devotees who come here to seek blessings from the Goddess. Perched at a height of 4,000 meters, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Rajeshwari which is the local deity of the Garhwal kings. A fair is held every year in the month of April. Apart from the religious importance, the temple is also a treasured from archeological point of view.
Gaura Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and is believed be built in the 7th century AD and is considered to as old as Kedarnath and Badrinath. According to mythology, it is believed that the temple was built by Lord Kuber. During the harvest season, a large fair is organized. The locals offer chapaatis made from the freshly wheat to the deity as a gratitude. Other important places in Devalgarh is Laxminarayan temple and Som-ki-danda (King’s scaffold).

Devalgarh is situated 18-19 kms from Srinagar on Khirsu-Srinagar road. Few kilometers before Dhari Devi temple, the road bifurcates – the road on right takes you to Devalgarh. Nearest railway station at Rishikesh (125 kms) & Kotdwar, Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport (140 kms).
