It is believed that Bhairav has a strong affinity for everything black, which is why the Prasaad (offering) here is made from Manduwe Ka Aata (finger millet flour), a black-colored ingredient. Bhairav, often referred to as The Gatekeeper of Garhwal, is a vital figure in the region’s spiritual beliefs.
Historically, Bhairav Garhi is one of the 52 Garhs (fortresses) of the Garhwal region. Originally known as Langoor Garh, the temple is located atop Langul Mountain and was consequently named Langurgarh. The fort was considered highly powerful, and in 1791, the Gorkhas attempted to conquer it. After a siege lasting two years and an intense 28-day attack, the Gorkhas were ultimately defeated and forced to retreat. This fort’s invincibility earned it the name Ajaygarh (the invincible fort).
According to history, one of the Gorkhas, Thapa, was so impressed by the power of Bhairav that he offered a 40 kg copper plate at the temple as a tribute. The Bhairav Garhi Temple is built on the tomb of Bhairav, and to the left of the temple, you will find a sacred Shaktikund.
In addition to Bhairav Garhi, there is another temple called Langur Garhi, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, often known as Hanuman Garhilocated about 2 km away from Bhairav Garhi.
