In the suburban alleys of Rishikesh, there is an erstwhile ashram of late Guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi also known as the Beatles Ashram where the Fab-four attended a session of transcendental meditation. It was here that the English rock band composed over 50 songs during their stay in 1968.

History of the Chaurasi Kutia aka Beatles Ashram

In 1961, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi took 15 acres of land from the Forest Department on lease for 20 years and despite making grave efforts, the ashram administration failed to renew the lease and it expired in 1981. In 2000, the Supreme Court issued an order asking the Forest Department to get rid of all the illegal occupants from the reserve area, across the country. Maharishi's staff evacuated the place by 2003 and the ashram was left to breathe in peace.

The façade and walls of the Chaurasi Kutia also known as ‘The Beatles Ashram’ are dominated by the murals of John Lennon and other band members, luring music lovers from all over the globe, to visit this place. One can see the vandalized buildings, graffiti art and other floral patterns illegally painted by the visitors in the Mahesh Yogi Ashram.

The Beatles Ashram got a new life in December, 2016

The Beatles Ashram, as it is famously known, became the front paper news when the Chaurasi Kutia (84 huts) were reopened for the tourists on December 8, 2016. The place is under the control of the Uttarakhand Forest Department’s Rajaji Tiger Reserve. And within a year 8,634 Indians and around 1,348 foreign tourists have visited the ashram, giving a revenue of Rs 19.80 lakh to the Forest Department. Now the spiritual retreat is brimming with life, the overgrown bushes surrounding the ashram have been trimmed and the entire place has been cleaned.

Entry Fee

Since the Chaurasi Kutiya aka Beatles Ashram falls under the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, the visitors are asked to pay A minimal entry fees of Rs 150 for Indian visitors and Rs 600 for the foreign nationals.

Take the road from the Ram Jhula towards Gita Bhawan and Parmarth Niketan Ashram, at the end of this road you’ll see the closed iron gate of The Beatles Ashram. The ashram is only 2 km away from Ram Jhula and 3 km away from Laxman Jhula. Rishikesh railway station at 13 km is the nearest railhead from the ashram.
