Bantony Castle is a 125-year-old Castle it was the summer royal residence of the Maharaja of Sirmaur. The building is said to have been designed by TEG Cooper and before its development started in 1880, the site had a cottage belonging to Cap A. Gordon which housed armed force officials.

Bantony Castle had housed the office of the Himachal Police since 1957 and it was after the last owner won the fight in court that the police were vacant the building. The main building is a two-story structure developed in the mock Tudor style, part chalet and crowned with a sloping rooftop with little towers.

History of Bantony Castle in Shimla

Bantony Castle was built over 125 years ago on the estate which was the Summer Palace of Maharaja of Sirmaur. Before the castle was built, the estate had only a cottage that belonged to Captain A Gordon. In 2017, the Indian Government proposed refurbishing the Bantony estate and opening it to the public as a Heritage Museum. They bought the property for around INR 280 million. 

The foundation stone to commence the restoration was laid by Virbhadra Singh, the then Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The estimated cost of the renovation was about INR 3.6 million including the development of a restaurant and a recreational park.

Architecture of Bantony Castle in Shimla

The Bantony Castle is a two-story building with towers, sloping roofs, and a chalet. The estate covers more than 20,000 square meters of land in Shimla. The door of this building is made of cast iron. The front side of the palace has a cast-iron railing with the coat of arms belonging to the state of Sirmaur. 

The building is an ideal example of the Tudor Revival engineering or the mock Tudor architecture. The castle region will presently be used as a Heritage Museum and will have artifacts and things belonging to the colonial era.

Location & How to Reach Bantony Castle Shimla

Bantony Estate is situated on Bantony Hill, Kalibari Road in Shimla. It is easily accessible by road and visitors can walk or hire an auto-rickshaw to arrive at the castle from any part of the city. Those exploring by private/self-driven vehicles can take the route via Cart road and Mall road.
