With the objective to showcase the peculiar ancient flora associated with Lord Badrinath, Forest Research Wing in Haldwani established a research demonstration plot in the form of a small patch of the forest named as Badri Van, which is spread over 1 acre of land on the main highway at Badrinath in Uttarakhand.

Chief Conservator of Forest, Research wing Mr. Sanjiv  Chaturvedi, said that the forest was developed along the main highway to Badrinath Temple. In this forest, various native flora species like Badri Tulsi, Bhojpatra, Badriphal, and Badri tree would be grown.

Badriphal is a small deciduous tree that is found in the Himalayas at an altitude of 2,000 to 3,700 m. Badri tree belongs to the Cupressaceae family and has a characteristic aroma in its fruits and leaves, which is used to make incent sticks (Agarbatti or Dhoopbatti). Bhojpatra is another important ethnobotanical and religious species of the Badrinath area. Its bark has been used historically for writing as well as for making medicines.

History of Badri Van

In year 815 AD, Adi Guru Shankaracharya visits Badrinath Temple. During his visit to the temple of Badrinath, he is said to have named the forest around Badrinath as “Badri Van” because of the predominance of trees like Bhojpatra, Badri, Badriphal. He said while explaining the inspiration behind the name of the plot.

Location & How to Reach Badri Van

Badri van is situated on the main highway of Badrinath Temple. You can reach here by road because this is well connected by road. You can take a public bus or vehicle or drive your own vehicle to reach this beautiful forest “Badri Van”.
