Auli FAQs

Local people of Auli are very humble and even make sure that all the tourists are safe and sound. Lastly, common sense is always important to keep oneself out of troubles.

Summer in Auli stays from April to June making this period very pleasant with temperate and cool climate. Monsoon season can be avoided from June to You can feel the chills of winter at Auli from October itself which gets intense from December to February, this is also the time when it snows heavily here. To withstand the cold, you can book a stay where room heaters or warm electric blankets are provided.

ATMs are not available in Auli. There are few ATMs available in Joshimath.

Although skiing is subjected to snowfall and weather conditions in Auli, but still time between late January and February are the perfect months for learning skiing on the slopes of Auli. 

Skiing gear can be rented from Joshimath and Auli, there are a few local vendors in Auli who provides the skiing gear on rental basis. You can also check about the same from your hotel / organiser to arrange for it in advance.

Mostly snowfall occurs between the months December to March Auli. This time is most suitable to visit here for winter sports like skiing and hiking. We suggest pre-booking your hotel for peak season because there are very few hotels available in Auli. 

There are several treks that start from Auli itself, Auli being the base camp. If you are a beginner and want to indulge in a day hike then trek to Gorson Bugyal and Gorson Top would be ideal for you. The most popular trekking route near Auli is Kuari Pass. Experienced trekkers can also do an extension to Kuari Pass by doing the summit of Pangarchulla Peak.

There are two major fairs and festivals are celebrated in Auli.

• Mata Murti Ka Mela Celebrated in the month of September, the Mata Murti Ka Mela is a religious festival for the Hindus. On this day, Shri Badrinath’s mother is worshipped and a large procession is held at the Badrinath temple.
• Auli Winter Carnival During peak winters, Auli comes to life as it celebrates its snow day in January or February. The icy slopes in Auli start to buzz with skiers and snowboarders allowing them to indulge in this extremely fun sport.  Ski Events are also held on the slopes of Auli in January and February.

All major mobile network providers have good connectivity in Auli. However, if you go into the skiing areas, you might face low network coverage or no network at all.

Gondola Ride from Joshimath to Auli costs around Rs. 900 for roundtrip. Tickets are subject to availability and can be booked on arrival only. Prices are subject to change. The cost of Chair Car in Auli costs around Rs. 350 only.

Auli is best known as a skiing destination. Thus, the best time to visit Auli is during the winter season from late November to late March. This season is considered ideal for skiers because the mountains are covered in fresh snow which is very suitable for skiing. The summer months are very pleasant and afford stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan mountain range.

The nearest airport to Auli is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which is approximately 285 kms from Auli.

The nearest airport to Auli is Haridwar Railway Station at a distance of 290 km from Auli which is connected with daily trains from all major cities of India.

There are quite a few car rental services available in Joshimath. At Auli you can contact your hotel or organiser for arranging a cab to do local sightseeing as well travelling from Auli to other cities and towns. The rates of the taxis vary depending upon the vehicle requested and the kilometers covered.

Auli is at a distance from 253 kms and 270 kms from Rishikesh and Haridwar respectively. One can easily opt for taxi services on a private basis. Various local and state-run buses provide daily services from Rishikesh to Joshimath which is at a distance of 16 kms from Auli.

There are few other places which can be visited from Auli. The town of Joshimath is just 16 kms away from Auli. The famous shrine of Badrinath is at a distance of 60 kms from Auli. In addition to that, famous town of Mana is just 4 kms from Badrinath. You can also visit Niti Valley and Malari Village via Tapovan. 

The highway from Rishikesh to Joshimath is in good condition and the roads are wide at most stretches. There are a few delicate zones though where the construction is still happening. There are a few rockfall zone where you need to drive cautiously, specially during monsoon.

The road from Joshimath to Auli is slightly narrow but in good condition. You can self drive to Auli as well. However during peak winter season of Dec End to January End, when it snows heavily the road gets blocked. However there are snow cutters in Auli which clear the road whenever that happens. 

Auli is at a distance of 496 kms from Delhi. There are various modes of transportation that are available to reach Auli:

• By Road: Auli is well connected with major Uttarakhand cities via motorable roads. It is a littile bit difficult to find direct bus to Auli from Delhi. We suggest that first take bus for destinations like Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun and Srinagar Garhwal then take another ride for Auli from here. Buses, taxis, cabs and shared vehicles are easily available for Auli from Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Haridwar. These places are well connected with frequently operated bus services from Kashmere Gate ISBT. One can opt for semi-deluxe, deluxe and AC Volvo as per their needs. You can also hire a personal cab or taxi for Auli directly from Delhi as per your convenience.
• By Rail: The nearest railhead is Haridwar, which is 290 km from Auli. There are numerous trains connecting Haridwar junction with other major cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata etc. The frequency of trains to Haridwar is quite high as it is one of the most revered and religious place in India.
• By Air: The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which is approximately 20 kilometres from Rishikesh and 285 kms from Auli, and offers daily connectivity with New Delhi.

Yes, Asia’s highest Gondola Ride can be booked from Joshimath. It takes around 20 minutes to reach Auli from Joshimath via Gondola. There is also a Chair Car on the slopes of Auli which takes you further on the ski slopes and makes it easier for skiers to venture out for multiple rounds of downhill skiing.

Auli being a Ski Destination has limited budget properties which are spread in the outskirts of Auli. There is a GMVN Guest House in Auli and premium properties include Mountain Rover. There aren't many restaurants in Auli and you'll have to rely on dine in facility at the property you are staying at. We recommend booking your stay in advance before traveling to Auli, specially during the peak winter season when you can ski there.
