Anusuya Devi Temple & Atri Muni Ashram in Gopeshwar

Anusya Devi Temple Myths and Legends

It is believed that once goddess Parvati, Lakshmiji and Saraswati sent their husbands Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh to take Devi Anusuya's strength test. When they arrived at ashram Devi Anusuya offered food to them. But they did not take the food and put a condition in front of her. That they will accept the food only at one condition when she will serve food without wearing clothes.

After hearing this Devi Anusuya became tensed, that how could she do that. Atlast, Devi closed her eyes and thinks about her husband. Suddenly, she got an intuition that these sages are gods and they are testing her strength. After that she put a condition that she is agree to do that but for that they have to take the form of her sons. The gods agreed to it, and then she served food to them.

Later on three gods started living there as Devi Anusuya's sons. When the gods did not reach back to parlock, then goddess Parvati, Lakshmiji and Saraswati apologized to Devi Anusuya and requested her to back their husbands. After that she agreed to it and since then this place is known as Ma Sati's name.
