  • Chandanwari: Located about 15 kilometers from Pahalgam, Chandanwari marks the first major stop on the route. Private vehicles are not permitted from Pahalgam to Chandanwari, and pilgrims must take taxis to reach this point. Chandanwari also serves as the official starting point for the trek.
  • Pissu Top: A challenging segment of the journey lies between Chandanwari and Pissu Top, covering approximately 3 kilometers. This steep trek takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete, offering pilgrims a demanding but rewarding experience.
  • Sheshnag Lake: Situated about 7 kilometers from Pissu Top, Sheshnag Lake is a scenic, high-altitude resting point. The trek to this location is moderate in difficulty and offers beautiful views, providing pilgrims with a serene spot to rest and rejuvenate.

2. Baltal Route: Shorter but Steeper

The Baltal route is shorter and more direct, covering approximately 14 kilometers from Baltal to the Amarnath Cave. Although the distance is less, this route is steeper and more physically demanding, making it suitable for pilgrims who are in good health and prefer a faster journey. The Baltal route typically takes 1-2 days to complete.

  • Baltal: The journey starts from Baltal, which is closer to Srinagar and can be easily accessed by road. Pilgrims can register at designated counters in Baltal.

  • Amarnath Cave: The 11 kilometer trek from Domail to the Amarnath Cave is a steep climb, with a narrow section along the way. Despite the challenging ascent, the route is shorter than the Pahalgam path, making it a popular choice for those looking for a quicker way to reach the cave.

Amarnath Helicopter Services

By Train: The nearest railway station to Amarnath is Jammu Tawi, which is well-connected to major cities across India. From Jammu, pilgrims can continue their journey by road to reach Srinagar, Pahalgam, or Baltal. The distance from Jammu Tawi Railway Station to Pahalgam is approximately 235 km, while the distance to Baltal is around 330 km. Pilgrims can choose their preferred route accordingly.

By Air:     The nearest airport to Amarnath is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, approximately 90 km from the starting points of the pilgrimage. Flights from major Indian cities connect to Srinagar, and from there, pilgrims can take a taxi or bus to Pahalgam or Baltal.
