Adi Badri is part of famous Panch Badri of Uttarakhand. It is a group of sixteen temples, belonging to the Gupta period. Among them is the Narayan temple, where a black stone idol of Vishnu, three feet high is enshrined. This place is within the Badrikshetra, and Badrinath being the name for Vishnu, the temple is known as the Adi Badri.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu resided at Adi Badri during the Satya, Treta and Dwapar yugas before moving to Badrinath in Kali Yuga. Whenever the road to Badrinath is closed due to weather conditions, devotees worship Lord Vishnu at Adi Badri. The ancient saints and seers prophesized that Lord Vishnu will shift his abode to Bhavishya Badri in Satya Yuga after the completion of Kali Yuga.
Another legend states that Maharishi Ved Vyas, who is known to have divided the Veda into Rigvega, Samveda, Yajurveda and Atharveda, wrote Bhagwat Gita at Adi Badri which was delivered by the God himself.

By Road - You can take bus, private taxi from Delhi to Haridwar-Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar-Rudraprayag-Karnaprayag-Adi badri. The other route is from Nainital or Ramnagar to Ranikhet and then to Karnaprayag via Chakhutiya. From Karnaprayag Adi badri is just 19 kms.
