Important Things to Carry for Trekking

A well-planned trekking checklist helps you stay safe, comfortable and prepared throughout your journey. Whether you are trekking in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir or any other Himalayan region, carrying the right clothing, equipment and personal essentials can make a significant difference to your overall trekking experience.

This trekking packing list covers the essential gear, clothing, food items, personal accessories and medical supplies recommended for both beginner and experienced trekkers. You can customise the checklist depending on the season, trek duration and altitude.

Here, we have provided the complete list of things to carry for trekking and camping.

Basic Trekking Essentials

  • An identity card - Original and Photocopies (MANDATORY)   
  • BackPack & Rain Cover (50-60 liter)
  • Day Pack & Rain Cover (20-30 liter, If you hire mule or porter)
  • 1 ltr of pet water bottle or hydration pack
  • Floaters or Sandals, Trekking Shoes (waterproof are better during snow and rain)
  • LED Torch/Headlamp (With extra batteries)
  • Poncho, Rain Coat or Umbrella any one is must (Poncho are lightweight, easy to carry/fit)

Clothing Checklist

The clothing you carry depends on the season, trek altitude and expected weather conditions. Winter treks generally require five clothing layers, while most summer and monsoon treks can be completed comfortably with three to four layers.

  • 2 Pairs of Quick Dry Tees and Track Pants (Denim are not recommended for treks.)
  • 1 pair of T-shirts (half and full sleeve)
  • 3 Pair of Cotton Socks, 2 pairs of woolen socks
  • 2 Full Sleeve Sweater or Fleece Jacket
  • Thermal Wear – 1 pair (you can keep two if going on the long trek)
  • Gore Tex type similar hard shell for rain or snow  to be worn over mid layers like fleece or down jackets.
  • One down feather Jacket
  • Sun Cap, One Scarf, Light towel, Gloves (1 woolen, 1 waterproof)
  • Woolen cap or Balaclava that covers the ear.    (protection from cold waves), Dark UV Sunglasses
  • Carry a few plastic bags in case your clothes get wet.   

Food and Energy Snacks

  • Energy bars
  • Dry fruits and nuts
  • Dark chocolate
  • Glucose or electrolyte powder
  • ORS sachets
  • Biscuits or trail mix
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder

Personal Hygiene Kit

  • Personal Toilet Kit and toilet paper, Sanitizer, Tooth Brush & Paste
  • Lip Balm, Cold Cream & Sun Screen lotion (SPF 40+)
  • Personal Medicine Kit (with basis first aid kit and your regular medicines),
  • Anti-fungal cream: Carry an antifungal cream if you are sensitive to sweating and prone to skin irritations around genitals or groin area due to lack of bathing.
  • Wet wipes
  • Biodegradable soap
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Nail cutter
  • Small garbage bag for waste

Trekking Packing Tips

  • Keep your backpack weight as low as possible.
  • Pack frequently used items in the top compartment.
